Be my eyes is a great app that connects visually impaired (either blind or low vision people) with sighted people from around the world. The volunteers can help blind people do their every day’s tasks or special tasks. The blind person asks for help and a notification is received by a number of volunteers. Whoever picks up the call first, they would be connected to the blind person who needs help via a video link. The video link would provide a mean for the volunteer to see through from the back camera of the smartphone of the blind person. Using the video link, both participants can communicate verbally in order to help the blind person in the task that is in hand. If you do not have an Android or iOS smartphone. If there is no one to help in your primary language, the recipient will be connected to someone from who speaks the secondary language stated in the application.

Signing up as a volunteer or a blind or low vision person:

In order to signup, you need to download and install either the iOS or Android version. Once you have installed the app. You can either create an account as a volunteer or you can create an account as a blind person or low-vision person.

For a blind or low vision person, there will be a “Call First Available Volunteer” button on the home screen. That would initiate a call response to volunteers who speak the same language. Whoever from the volunteers picks the call first, they would be connected with the person in need. For volunteers, once you have made an account and logged into the app. All you have to do is wait for someone to seek help. If someone need help your phone will generate a response answering that app notification will connect you with the individual.

Once you signup as a volunteer, it might take a few weeks to get your first call. As there are a number of volunteers from around the world who are willing to help. You can also help in making the app accessible in all languages from around the world by translating the apps and the content in your native language.

In order to run be my eyes on PC windows or macbook. We will use Android emulator on your computer. The emulator provides a virtual Android operating system environment on your computer. Which then can be used to run Android apps or games.

  1. First of all, you will need to download Bluestacks. It is the Android emulator which we are going to use.
  2. Once you have downloaded and installed the emulator. Open it.
  3. On the right side of the screen, you will see “My Games”. In that menu, you will see Google Play Store.
  4. Use your Gmail account to login to Google Play Store.
